External and internal applicants will be considered.****DCR is currently seeking candidates for law enforcement Chief Ranger positions within the Division of State Parks. Candidates selected for a preliminary interview will also be required to satisfactorily complete physical agility and mental health assessments. DCR will fill current and future positions for Chief Ranger from the applications received, as vacancies occur.
Responsibilities include: Recruiting, hiring, training and supervising seasonal staff, which provides support for park programs and services; overseeing and recruiting for volunteers and camp host programs; assisting in the overall management and operation of the park, with special emphasis on visitor and resource protection, provision of visitor services, volunteer labor, interpretive programs, resource management, concession operation and buildings and grounds maintenance; assisting in the development of park budget and annual operating plan; supervising development and operation of interpretive programs and facilities to include explanation of natural and historical features; managing implementation of park work programs and maintenance of park facilities and grounds; coordinating publicity, designs “in- house” materials to be used on bulletin boards and as handouts; and providing for public safety and resource protection by enforcing park rules and regulations and state laws through use of Conservation Officer powers.
Qualifications: Working experience or knowledge in a park or other recreational setting; experience in supervising, training and maintaining effective working relationships with the public, employees and volunteers; working knowledge or experience in preparing and presenting interpretive and environmental education programs; working knowledge or experience in the management of natural resources; working knowledge of OSHA regulations and the ability to train staff on the proper use of tools, equipment and procedures necessary for a safe and efficient completion of an employee's duties; and ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays. Individual is required to have or have the ability to obtain a valid Virginia driver's license and certifications in CPR and First Aid and other certifications as necessary. Required to accept law enforcement training and authority, as well as required to live in park housing.
Sworn Conservation Officer Requirements: Must be a US Citizen; be at least 21 years old; must pass a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records inquires; must be a high school graduate or have a GED degree; have not been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia; and have not tested positive on a pre- employment drug screening test. Federal law prohibits anyone convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm.
